2007-2008 Class Description

Surface Effects 5 Day Seminar
$450 per student for a 5 day seminar.
Beginner / Advanced
Hone your skills in this five day intensive study course. Designed to provide an understanding in the latest dye techniques and to create multiple surface effects in foiling, bonding and fabric manipulation utilizing hand and machine techniques. At weeks end each student will have created a richly embellished multi-dimensional, art quilt.
Chemicals, dyes, paints and pigments needed for the class are included in price. PFD fabric not included. A complete list of fabric suppliers is provided for students. This is a great class for anyone wanting to get a basic understanding of many techniques and come away with a small multi-dimensional art quilt.

Multi-Dimensional Embellished Cloth

Create a richly embellished, multi-dimensional floral art quilt in just three days! Using hand-dyed cottons and silks, each student will learn to manipulate fabric into beautiful flowers and leaves. Rich colored depth will be achieved by layering sheer silk fabric. Kits of hand-dyed cotton and silks will be available for purchase at class.
This is the perfect class for the students who want all the hand-dyed fabrics without the mess. I am always amazed at what the students produce in this class.

Create a Landscape in a Day

No need to be an artist to paint a landscape. Utilizing new and exciting, water soluble Neo-color wax pastels everyone can express their artistic side. Working with pastels, we will first paint our landscape and then further embellish our painting with stitching and yarns.
This is a great class to break into thread painting to learn how to manipulate the machine to get the interesting textures that create a landscape. For those insecure about drawing a landscape a drawing is provided in the kit.
Kit required.

Below is the fun ooh and ah classes.

Each class individually will provide an in depth knowledge of all those products and techniques you see in the books but are not quite sure how to get started. You will go home with a notebook of samples to keep for reference or put the pieces into an art quilt. Kit required for each class.

*In addition to the brochure there is a two day condensed version of Things that Shimmer, Stick, Stitch, Sizzle and Burn. Up to 20 different techniques will be demonstrated with students trying their hand at each.

Things That Shimmer

Shiva Sticks, Neo color wax pastels and metallic fabric pigments will make your fabric shimmer with subtle highlights. Making your own personal mark on fabric with stencils stamps or freehand can be a wonderful way to get out of the quarter inch box! Working on hand-dyed or commercial fabric, we will start you on your way to creating “Fab Fabric” to quilt with.

Things That Stick

This class is for all you closet “Tech Heads”. Play on fabric with foils, glues, pigments, heat guns, and all of those surface techniques you have been afraid to try on your own.

Things That Stitch

Learn to create surface texture by hand and machine. There are various kinds of yarn and threads available to us today, but what are we to do with them? This class will demonstrate many new textures that can be created by making simple adjustments to your machine.
Kit required.

Things That Sizzle and Burn
$450 day rate $22.50 per student Maximum 20 Students

Let's make the fabric sizzle! Create beautiful lacy effects using felt and inexpensive prom fabrics. Students will employ embossing powders, soldering irons, and heat guns to make their creations "Sizzle and Burn."
Kit required.

Class fee plus expenses, if you choose a multi day class I am happy to stay as a guest in a private home. I also offer classes here at my studio for 3 to 5 students.

Workshop Fee: $450.00 per day
Lecture Fee: $375 for one hour, plus Q & A
5 Day Workshop Fee: $450.00 per student for 5 days.

TRANSPORTATION: Full round trip airfare (or .45 cents per mile for round trip car expenses); parking fees and cab or shuttle fare to and from airport to be reimbursed at the conclusion of the engagement. Please allow me to arrange my flight plans, at the most economical rate, at least one month prior to the start of class.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Full room and board expenses; preference for non-smoking hotel / motel accommodations. However at the instructor’s discretion private home accommodations with private room and private bath are acceptable, non-smoking only.

Workshop and lecture fees are to be paid immediately upon completion of last workshop or lecture.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR WORKSHOPS

Each student must have sufficient workspace.
Adequate electrical outlets since all workshops require extensive use of irons and heat guns. Extension cords, ironing boards and cutting space.
Appropriate space for slide projection
The teacher will provide a complete supply list for students prior to class.
The teacher will provide for purchase any hard to find items listed on supply list.
The teacher will need two worktables and design wall.
The teacher will need a whiteboard and markers with eraser, or large marker pad with easel.
Other items as specified by the teacher beforehand (e.g. running water, adequate sinks for rinsing dyes)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR LECTURES:
The teacher will bring her own digital projector for slide presentation. Guild will provide a table, screen and podium and microphone for large groups, heavy duty extension cord and power strip as well as tables to display quilts and sale items. Teacher will bring quilts, patterns, kits, hand-dyed fabrics and specialty items listed in supply lists. Teacher will donate a kit as a door prize for the guild.
